State Board of Education, Ward 1
Emily Gasoi is a mom, a teacher, and an advocate for strong schools for all our children. She worked for many years as a course instructor and mentor for new teachers at Center for Inspired Teaching, and helped start several teacher professional development groups, including DC Soup and The Washington Teachers Inquiry Group. In 2015, Emily co-founded Artful Education, an organization that works with schools and arts programs to strengthen practices related to creative teaching and learning. For the past three years, she taught in the Program in Education, Inquiry, and Justice at Georgetown University.
With seven years of classroom experience, Emily has worked with teachers and principals across the District. Emily is committed to putting student needs ahead of the over-emphasis on test scores and data. As a parent of DC public school student, Emily is committed to working for strong neighborhood schools so all families have great public school choices. Her top priorities are centered around Democracy, Equity, and Accountability. Democracy means working to shift from a rigid, top-down system of decision making to one grounded in community-based input and engagement. Equity provides for direct targeted support in the form of greater resources and funding to strengthen neighborhood public schools so that all families have access a high-quality education close to home. Accountability means greater transparency and meaningful accountability across DCPS and Charter school sectors.
