Burlington, VT – Today, Democracy for America (DFA) celebrated Mazie Hirono’s victory over Republican Governor Linda Lingle to become Hawaii’s next U.S. Senator, and the state’s first female senator. DFA is proud to have endorsed newly-elected Hirono as a member of the Dean Dozen, the highest tier of endorsements from the organization. With it, Hirono received more than $49,900 in support from DFA members.
“Our campaign is greatly humbled by the strong support we saw from DFA,” Mazie Hirono, a Dean Dozen candidate running for U.S. Senate in Hawaii said. “The DFA community was instrumental in helping us defeat the Republicans' number 1 draft pick for the U.S. Senate and ensuring we kept this Senate seat in President Obama's home state blue. Our campaign was about taking the Hawaii values of equal opportunity and fairness to the U.S. Senate. As Hawaii's next Senator, I will always keep fighting for our shared priorities and our middle class families.”
“Mazie will be a strong progressive voice in the Senate,” Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America, said. “Since 2007, Mazie’s been advocating for what’s best for Hawaii, her constituents, and for the entire progressive movement. In Congress, she has consistently been a champion for a stronger middle class and women’s rights. Now, she’s reached new heights and will continue her progressive politics for an even larger audience. We look forward to seeing her partner with fellow progressives Sen. Sherrod Brown, Sen. Sanders and newly elected Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin to continue to fight for principles that move our country forward. I congratulate Mazie on her historic victory tonight.”
