Judge Alicia Brooks is wife, mother, and judge, who has lived and worked in Charlotte for almost 30 years, who has dedicated her life and work to the Mecklenburg community by being accessible, accountable and action-oriented.

A native of Fayetteville, the youngest of three daughters, Judge Brooks was raised by her single mother, a bartender with a high school education who worked tirelessly to instill in her children the value of hard work, intellectual curiosity, education, and self-determination. Judge Brooks became the first generation to receive a doctoral degree, graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1988 and 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and political science and a juris doctorate, and began her legal career as an assistant public defender representing citizens from across Mecklenburg County.

She went on to become the assistant district attorney, and later launched her own private practice, serving as an accomplished criminal defense attorney in both State and Federal court for over 14 years.

Her 26-year legal career and great breadth of experience in nearly every kind of district court - family court, criminal court, child support and civil court - has made her an invaluable public servant ready to protect the citizens of Mecklenburg County and transform the criminal justice system towards greater ethics, transparency, and accountability. As a treatment court judge, she currently presides over Wellness court and Recovery court, and has been at the forefront of the effort to aid those with mental illness and addiction.

She has been a leader in supporting a stronger process for expunging criminal convictions for returning citizens, enabling them to reengage into society and participate more fully in our democracy. Through her work on the truancy court, she’s mentored countless young people across the district, challenging the school-to-prison pipeline and punitive approaches, and worked instead to get them the tools, access, support, and guidance they need to thrive over the longhaul.

Judge Brooks is running for reelection now in North Carolina at a time when its more important than ever to have a judicial bench of dedicated leaders prepared to transform the criminal justice system and bring her level of ethics, transparency, and accountability to the communities they serve.
